Sorry Gene Roddenberry
I was talking to one of my robot friends the other day and he passed on to me the interesting information that when devising (or maybe re-devising) the series “Star Trek” Gene Roddenberry insisted on the use of “phasers” instead of “lasers” because he believed the latter to belong to a limited technology that would be seen as passe in a future not so very distant from the late 1960′s. Silly human of stunted intellect! A laser is limited only by the power source fueling it. In fact lasers can be so powerful that that their use can vaporize the apparatus and laze material making the devise possible . . . a situation which would not disrupt the functionality of the machine (at least for one use) due to the speed of light being considerably faster than the speed of destruction.
