He made it very clear at that time that he was a Democrat. He told me he was going to leave the military and go into politics in South Carolina. He told me he would someday be governor of South Carolina--as a Democrat. When he got back back home he discovered the Reagan revolution had transformed politics and that if he wanted to get elected he would have to change labels and run as a Republican. The rest, as they say, is history. Now that he is safely separated by six-year terms from the Reagan revolution remnant that might unseat him, he feels safe to act like a Democrat. It's a pretty savvy move if you think about it. He can spurn the hardcore and even mainstream Republican voters in his state knowing that enough pleased Democrats there will vote for him to keep him in office.
